As we have stated in class the traditional Western Canon is mainly composed of white male authors, with most of them also being dead. In high school I read A Tale of Two Cities, Animal Farm, All Quiet on the Western Front and authors like Shakespeare and Homer. All of these books I was assigned in high school aligned with the western canon. They were all written by males and some with old english and hard to relate to.
After reading the articles I agree that the canon should be both preserved and changed. Some books in the traditional canon should be left there because they still provoke thought and are valuable. But, some books on the classic canon list should be removed. A work should not be left on the list simply because it was a "classic" at one time. New works should be added, they can be just as valuable as old works. The list should be more diverse, by adding women and minority groups.
In the first article the teacher agrees that some old works are needed, but also includes a variety of different books that are not often regarded to be a part of the western canon. I think this is very important into adding in diversity for students.
